Leech therapy and controlled bloodletting for stubborn skin and vein complaints
The fifth karma, used selectively. Medicinal leeches (jalaukavacharana) or a controlled venesection remove a small quantity of vitiated blood from a localised area. Reserved for conditions where heat and blood are involved and other routes have not helped.
How the session runs
Site cleaned and assessed · Sterile single-use leeches applied for 20–40 minutes · Site dressed and after-care explained
Traditionally used for
- Chronic non-healing wounds
- Varicose veins
- Psoriasis and stubborn eczema patches
- Localised gouty inflammation
When this therapy should not be done
- Anaemia
- Bleeding disorders and blood thinners
- Pregnancy
- Children and the very elderly
- Diabetes with poor circulation, unless assessed

Before you come
- Consultation required
- Eat before the session
- Inform us of any blood-thinning medicine
After the session
- Keep the dressing dry for 24 hours
- Mild oozing is expected and settles
- Report any spreading redness
