Virechana विरेचन

Medicated purgation that clears the liver and small intestine, and settles Pitta

The Pitta-clearing karma. A precisely dosed herbal purgative is given after the oleation days so that heat and bile-related toxins are cleared through the lower route. Traditionally the most widely applicable of the five for Indian constitutions, and the one usually chosen for skin, liver and metabolic complaints.

How the session runs

Three to seven preparation days with internal ghee and daily abhyanga and swedana · Purgative given in the morning on an empty stomach · Bowel movements monitored and graded through the day · Graduated diet begins that evening

Traditionally used for

  • Skin conditions such as acne, urticaria and eczema
  • Chronic acidity and heat symptoms
  • Sluggish digestion
  • Migraine of Pitta type

When this therapy should not be done

  • Pregnancy and nursing
  • Acute fever or diarrhoea
  • Rectal bleeding or piles with bleeding
  • Severe weakness or dehydration
  • Recent surgery

Before you come

  • Mandatory prior consultation
  • Complete the prescribed oleation days
  • Keep the day free and stay near a washroom

After the session

  • Samsarjana krama for three days
  • Warm, simple, freshly cooked food only
  • Avoid travel, exertion and cold wind for 48 hours
