Basti Karma बस्ति कर्म
Medicated enema for back pain, joint problems and nerve and muscle strength
Called ardha chikitsa — half of all treatment — because Vata governs movement and the colon is the seat of Vata. Two forms are used in a course: Anuvasana (oil based, nourishing) and Niruha or Asthapana (herbal decoction, cleansing), alternated over 8, 16 or 30 days depending on the plan.
How the session runs
Local abhyanga and swedana over the abdomen and lower back · Warm medicated oil or decoction administered · Retention time noted · Rest until the urge passes naturally

- Low back pain and sciatica
- Osteoarthritis and joint stiffness
- Constipation and IBS of Vata type
- Neurological weakness and post-stroke rehabilitation
- Menstrual pain
When this therapy should not be done
- Diarrhoea and dysentery
- Bleeding piles or rectal injury
- Severe debility
- Pregnancy
- Acute abdominal pain of unknown cause
