What Panchakarma actually is, and what it is not

· Dikssha Choudhary

Panchakarma means "five actions": Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. Around those five sits a structure that people often skip when they read about it online.

The first stage, Purvakarma, is preparation. Internal ghee (snehapana), oil massage (abhyanga) and steam (swedana) over three to seven days loosen the waste lodged in the tissues and bring it back to the digestive tract. Without this stage the main procedure has nothing to remove and simply weakens you.

The second stage, Pradhankarma, is the main action itself, chosen for your dominant dosha — not all five for everybody.

The third stage, Paschatkarma, is recovery: samsarjana krama, a graduated return to normal food over about three days, plus rest and rasayana herbs. This is the stage patients most often cut short, and it is the stage that decides whether the results hold.

So a genuine Panchakarma is measured in days, not hours. A single massage is wonderful, but it is not Panchakarma.
